Newell Calls for Clarity on Offshore Oil Exploration Plans

Opposition spokesman Omar Newell is calling for greater transparency and environmental safeguards regarding potential offshore oil exploration in Jamaica’s waters.

Key Points:

  • Questions were raised about spill response systems and environmental protection.
  • Concerns include risks to tourism, fisheries, and marine ecosystems.
  • The Government has expressed optimism about possible oil discoveries offshore Jamaica.
  • Exploration findings were recently reported by United Oil & Gas Plc.

During his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Parliament, Newell questioned whether Jamaica is adequately prepared for the environmental and legal challenges associated with offshore drilling.

He asked the Government to clarify what marine risk frameworks, liability systems, and scientific assessments are currently in place before any major decisions are made.

The concerns come after recent statements suggesting that commercially viable oil reserves may exist in Jamaica’s offshore waters. Energy Minister Daryl Vaz previously noted that discussions had taken place with major international oil companies.

Newell warned that environmental governance is becoming increasingly important globally, particularly as countries face climate-related legal and financial risks.

Debate over offshore oil exploration is expected to continue as questions grow about environmental safeguards and long-term national impacts.
