Body of Teen Recovered After Vehicle Plunges into Rio Cobre

The body of 17-year-old Oniesh Derby was recovered after a vehicle he was driving plunged into the Rio Cobre in St Catherine on Monday night. Key Points: The incident occurred near Flat Bridge. Derby reportedly lost control of a Toyota Hiace motor truck. The vehicle veered off the road and entered the river. Jamaica Defence Force divers recovered the body on Tuesday. Authorities confirmed that the teenage driver lost control of the vehicle while traveling along the roadway, resulting in the vehicle leaving the road and plunging into the Rio Cobre. Emergency teams later initiated recovery efforts. Divers from the Jamaica Defence Force successfully retrieved the body approximately one day after the incident. Mica Moore to Open Jamaica’s Campaign in Women’s Monobob


 Mica Moore will open Jamaica’s campaign at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics when she competes in the women’s monobob on Sunday morning in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The 33-year-old athlete is scheduled to start 20th in the first run at the Eugenio Monti Sliding Center. The competition features 25 qualified athletes and spans four runs over two days, with medals awarded based on the lowest cumulative time.

Moore brings a strong sporting résumé, including a Welsh 100m title in 2017, relay representation at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and gold in the two-woman event at the 2017 Junior Bobsleigh World Championships for Great Britain.

She began competing for Jamaica in January 2025 after gaining citizenship through her grandfather, Venson Byfield, and has also been named Jamaica’s Opening Ceremony flagbearer.

Moore’s Olympic appearance signals Jamaica’s continued expansion into winter sports and highlights the growing diversity of its international athletic representation.
