Prime Minister Holness Urges Jamaicans to Embrace AI for National Growth

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has called on Jamaicans to fully embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a key driver of productivity and economic transformation. Speaking at the Amber Group’s 10th Anniversary Gala and AI Robotics Showcase, he outlined the Government’s plan to integrate AI into education, industry, and national development.

The Prime Minister said Jamaica must shift focus from traditional jobs to higher-value work that leverages technology. He explained that 70 percent of Jamaica’s economy is service-based, and growth will depend on improving both the quality and sophistication of these services.

Dr. Holness highlighted the establishment of the National AI Laboratory at the University of Technology (UTECH) as a major step forward and said similar facilities should be established across the island, even at the primary school level.

He emphasized that the Government’s goal is to use technology to enhance, not replace, human capability. “The solution is not to hide from technology or fear it,” he said. “It’s to use it to increase skills and opportunities for our people.”

The initiative aligns with Jamaica’s broader digital transformation strategy, which seeks to position the country for inclusive and innovation-driven growth in the AI era.
