Police Probe Death of UWI Student Found in George Alleyne Hall

Police are investigating the death of 20-year-old University of the West Indies (UWI) student
Victoria Brown Hanley, who was found unresponsive in her dorm room at George Alleyne Hall on Thursday morning.

According to the Mona Police Post, Brown Hanley’s roommate discovered her lying face-down with a scarf wrapped tightly around her neck after returning to the room shortly after 6:00 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Michael Phipps confirmed that investigators are keeping “all possibilities open,” adding that early reports of suicide have not been verified. A post-mortem will determine the exact cause of death.

The incident has cast a shadow over the UWI Mona campus, with students expressing grief and concern. University officials, including Deputy Principal Dr Tomlin Paul and Campus Principal Professor Denzel Williams, met with students and the victim’s family. Counsellors and chaplains have been deployed to support the campus community.

While some students have questioned the visibility of mental health services, Guild President Roshaun Wynter said the university has mechanisms in place, including a mental health support unit and psychologist.

Closing Line:
Police continue to treat the case as a death investigation pending autopsy results, as the campus mourns the loss of a promising young scholar.
