Kingston Shooting Leaves St George’s Girls Students Hospitalized

Two students from St George’s Girls’ Primary and Infant School remain hospitalized after gunmen opened fire on a group of residents along Text Lane in Central Kingston. The attack injured six people, including the two girls, and has reignited concern over violence affecting children in Jamaica.

Principal Valrie Brown described the situation as “stunning and distressing,” calling for urgent reflection on how the nation protects its young citizens. She confirmed that the school community is receiving counselling and that staff members continue to create a supportive environment for students.

Education Minister Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon also condemned the incident, labelling the violence “senseless and heart-rending.” She stressed that children deserve opportunities to learn, play, and imagine their futures without fear.

The Text Lane shooting is part of a troubling trend following the deaths of 13-year-old Shantina Sergeant in Clarendon and four-year-old Shannon Gordon in Linstead. These cases have sparked renewed calls for improved community policing, mental-health support, and national collaboration to safeguard Jamaica’s children.
