Jamaicans Encouraged to Honour Senior Citizens on UN Day

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles Jr, is urging Jamaicans to celebrate the contributions of the nation’s senior citizens as the world observes the United Nations International Day of Older Persons on October 1.

The minister highlighted that older persons are not passive members of society but powerful agents of change who deserve respect and inclusion. He stressed that their voices must help shape policies, while communities must work to end age discrimination.

This year’s observance is being recognized under the theme: “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-being and Our Rights.” It aligns with Jamaica’s Senior Citizens Month, celebrated under the theme: “Respect, Protect, Empower, Connect.”

Globally, the population of seniors over 60 has more than doubled in the last three decades, reaching 1.2 billion in 2025, with projections of 2.1 billion by 2050. Jamaica’s own figures suggest that by 2030, 15 percent of its population will be over 60, with average life expectancy now at 73 years.

Charles Jr reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to expanding healthcare, strengthening senior-focused policies, and promoting digital literacy. He added that the country must ensure older citizens are respected, empowered, and connected.

Closing line: The call highlights the growing importance of ensuring dignity, care, and opportunities for Jamaica’s senior citizens in a rapidly changing world.
