Jamaica is marking ten years of progress in cybersecurity as the Government strengthens national digital defences and builds resilience against global threats. The milestone coincides with Cybersecurity Awareness Day on October 30, 2025, observed under the theme “Secure Today – Smarter Tomorrow.”
At a Post-Cabinet Press Briefing, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret’d) Godphey Sterling, Director of the Jamaica Cyber Incident Response Team (JaCIRT), highlighted Jamaica’s journey since the launch of the National Cybersecurity Strategy in 2015. He noted that the creation of JaCIRT gave the nation visibility into digital risks and the capacity to respond effectively to cyber threats.
Among the major achievements over the past decade are the establishment of the National Security Operations Centre in 2022, the Strengthening Cybersecurity in Jamaica Project funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the launch of the Jamaica Cyber Youth Empowerment Academy, supported by the Government of Canada. These initiatives have enhanced Jamaica’s capacity to detect, prevent, and mitigate cyber incidents.
Sterling also underscored the importance of training the next generation of cybersecurity professionals through programmes like VINCULA LAC, which received 25% more applications than expected.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe and secure digital environment for all Jamaicans, emphasizing that cybersecurity is central to the country’s long-term economic and national security goals.
As Jamaica looks to the future, this decade of progress marks a strong foundation for continued innovation, awareness, and resilience in the digital space.
