Body of Teen Recovered After Vehicle Plunges into Rio Cobre

The body of 17-year-old Oniesh Derby was recovered after a vehicle he was driving plunged into the Rio Cobre in St Catherine on Monday night. Key Points: The incident occurred near Flat Bridge. Derby reportedly lost control of a Toyota Hiace motor truck. The vehicle veered off the road and entered the river. Jamaica Defence Force divers recovered the body on Tuesday. Authorities confirmed that the teenage driver lost control of the vehicle while traveling along the roadway, resulting in the vehicle leaving the road and plunging into the Rio Cobre. Emergency teams later initiated recovery efforts. Divers from the Jamaica Defence Force successfully retrieved the body approximately one day after the incident. Business and Education Leaders Tackle Jamaica’s Skills Gap Amid Strong Economic Growth

Jamaica’s business and education leaders are set to address the country’s growing skills gap at the upcoming release of the GK Capital Management/Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Business and Consumer Confidence Indices on October 28.

Despite record employment levels and strong economic confidence, employers are finding it increasingly difficult to fill key positions. This paradox, dubbed the “confidence dilemma,” will take centre stage at the forum, which brings together leaders from business, academia, and workforce training.

Speakers will include Dr. Kevin Brown of the University of Technology, Dr. Taneisha Ingleton of the HEART/NSTA Trust, and Steven Whittingham of GraceKennedy Financial Group. They will discuss how Jamaica can sustain growth while addressing workforce shortages.

STATIN data show unemployment dropped to 3.3 percent — the lowest in Jamaica’s history — but underemployment and youth joblessness remain concerns. One in four young people is not in education, employment, or training.

Business and consumer confidence indices both remain high, yet employers say hiring challenges threaten productivity and expansion. The JCC’s Emile Leiba stressed that collaboration between the public and private sectors is vital to building a workforce that meets modern demands.

The forum is expected to explore solutions such as technical education reform, digital workforce readiness, and apprenticeship partnerships.
