Police in Kingston are investigating the suspected suicide of 26-year-old accountant and 2023 Miss Universe Jamaica finalist, Tyra Spaulding. She was reportedly found unresponsive at her home on Tuesday evening, with authorities treating the matter as a suspected case of suicide.
Spaulding competed in the 2023 Miss Universe Jamaica competition, where she gained recognition for her elegance, intelligence, and confidence. Outside the pageant, she worked professionally as an accountant and had also been outspoken about mental health. On August 15, she posted on Instagram that she was “going through hell,” and in a later YouTube video, she admitted to battling suicidal thoughts.
The Miss Universe Jamaica Organisation issued a statement expressing sadness at her passing, describing her as “a vibrant, intelligent and inspiring young woman whose grace and spirit touched everyone she met.” Condolences were extended to her family and loved ones on behalf of reigning Miss Universe Jamaica Dr. Gabrielle Henry and national directors Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams.
Spaulding’s passing has reignited discussions about mental health awareness in Jamaica, particularly among young adults. While the investigation continues, her memory is being honored as that of a professional, a finalist in one of Jamaica’s most prominent pageants, and an advocate for mental health awareness.
