📍WILLIAMSFIELD, MANCHESTER — JAMAICA
A 57-year-old man was killed Thursday evening after attempting an illegal U-turn on the newly opened Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000.
The deceased has been identified as Wayne Campbell, a resident of Old Porus Road in Manchester. Police say the incident occurred around 4:50 p.m., when Campbell, driving a black Mitsubishi Colt, tried to switch directions from westbound to eastbound at a median break — only to be T-boned by a Toyota Hiace also heading westbound.
Campbell was rushed to the Mandeville Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
⚠️ POLICE ISSUE WARNING: U-TURNS HERE ARE ILLEGAL
Law enforcement is urging motorists to avoid using the median break as a shortcut and instead use the Williamsfield roundabout, designed for safe turning.
“This practice is dangerous and illegal,” the police stressed.
The section of highway where the crash occurred is part of the May Pen to Williamsfield leg, opened in September 2023. Despite warnings, illegal U-turns remain a concern in this high-speed corridor.
🛣️ INFRASTRUCTURE VS. ACCESS: PORUS STILL LEFT OUT
Residents and business owners in Porus have long complained that the highway lacks direct access from their community.
While travellers from Kingston can exit at Toll Gate, locals argue that the long detour to Clarendon Park and back is inconvenient and time-consuming.
Political promises to create a direct link for Porus remain unfulfilled.
🗣️ OUR TAKE
This tragic death highlights how infrastructure without access planning creates real danger.
Wayne Campbell didn’t die just because of poor judgment — he died in part because his community still doesn’t have proper access to a national highway.
How many more shortcuts will become fatal before someone takes action?
