Tragic Drowning in Hanover: 8-Year-Old Boy Dies After River Outing with Father

What began as a quiet Sunday river outing in the Mt Peace district of Hanover turned into a devastating tragedy after an 8-year-old boy lost his life in a suspected drowning incident.

According to official reports, the incident occurred around 11:00 AM on Sunday, when the child, accompanied by his father, went swimming in a local waterway. Tragedy struck when the boy reportedly slipped into a deep section of the river and quickly began experiencing difficulties.

Despite his father's immediate attempt to save him, the current proved too strong, and his efforts were ultimately in vain.

The Lucea Fire Department was promptly contacted and dispatched a team including trained swift water rescue personnel and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). The rescue team worked alongside local divers from the community in an urgent search and recovery operation.

Eventually, the boy’s body was recovered from the river and transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident has left residents of the Mt Peace district and the wider Hanover parish in deep sorrow. Locals described the boy as a bright and playful child, and many have expressed support and condolences to the grieving family.

This tragedy has also reignited conversations around water safety, especially during the summer months when river outings are more frequent.

As Jamaica continues to face hot weather and more families seek rivers and beaches to cool off, experts are urging the public to take extra precautions:

  • Always swim in designated safe areas.

  • Ensure children are supervised by adults at all times.

  • Be aware of water depth and current strength.

  • Learn basic water rescue and CPR skills when possible.

The death of this young boy is a painful reminder of how quickly joy can turn to sorrow. As the community of Hanover mourns this loss, let it also serve as a reminder to approach water activities with heightened awareness and care.

Our thoughts are with the family during this incredibly difficult time.
