πSPANISH TOWN ROAD, KINGSTON — JAMAICA
A petrol truck burst into flames Monday afternoon, sending plumes of black smoke over Spanish Town Road and triggering panic near the Riverton City Dump.
Miraculously, the driver escaped unhurt, and no civilians were injured, though one firefighter sustained a minor injury while battling the blaze.
π FIREFIGHTERS LAUNCHED MASSIVE RESPONSE
Acting Fire Commissioner Leroy Orr confirmed that the Jamaica Fire Brigade received the emergency call at 11:58 a.m. A total of 37 firefighters from Trench Town, Half-Way Tree, and York Park rushed to the scene.
“We saw the tanker on fire and quickly got into operation. We were able to contain and eventually extinguish the fire,” Orr said.
The flames spread to Agri World Farm Store, located along the road, but were contained before further damage or injuries occurred.
π§― INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire, but a probe is expected in the coming days.
“We haven’t established what has caused the fire yet,” Orr told the media.
The incident has reignited concerns about safety protocols and transport regulations for flammable materials passing through densely populated areas.
π£️ OUR TAKE
This could’ve easily ended in tragedy. Petrol trucks travel through urban areas daily, and one small error can lead to catastrophe. More stringent safety checks and route risk assessments must be enforced.
Also, kudos to the quick response teams — 37 firefighters standing between Kingston and disaster.
