📍ST MARY, JAMAICA
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced the upcoming construction of a modern campus for Jeffrey Town Primary School, bringing long-overdue hope to students and staff who’ve endured outdated infrastructure and the effects of a decades-old fire.
Holness made the declaration during a visit to St Mary West, rallying support for Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) chairman Robert Montague, ahead of a tight race against People’s National Party (PNP) newcomer Omar Woodbine. Montague has held the seat since 2016, regaining it after losing in 2011.
The new school facility, according to Holness, will include:
-
Multipurpose auditorium
-
Computer room
-
Proper fencing
-
Storage space
-
Guidance counsellor’s office
-
Staff room and administrative offices
-
Upgraded sanitary facilities
🛠️ “All of these things are going to happen,” Holness confidently told the students. However, no official construction timeline has been released. The engineering studies and site inspections are still ongoing, ensuring that the soil can handle the infrastructure.
The current building, partially destroyed by fire in 1996 (or 1998, depending on varying reports), is now deemed structurally unsound. Holness emphasized, “The building could not go much further.”
💰 In 2024, the Government allocated funds to begin planning. Parliament has approved $250 million for the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) under the School Infrastructure Improvement Project, targeting three schools: Mount Moriah (St Ann), Pisgah Primary and Infant (St Elizabeth), and now, Jeffrey Town Primary.
🗣️ OUR OPINION
This is not just a political announcement — it’s a long-overdue step toward educational equity. The children of Jeffrey Town deserve modern, safe, and functional learning spaces. While we await exact dates, the urgency must match the promise. Campaigning is one thing — delivery is another. We’ll be watching.
